I just read in Creative Machine Embridery magazine that you can stitch the outline of the object, then use fabric markers to color under the embroidery, with the color you will be embroidering, let it dry and then embroider it. They also listed a source, will have to get my magazine and refresh my memory on that. Anyway I had never heard about the fabric marker but it I think it is a great idea!
