I presently have the Orbitol blade sharpener which was $37.99 plus tax in Canada. I had the Stay Sharp disc one before. Both of them "help" a dull blade but they do not make it as good as new. If the blade has a nick, these sharpeners really don't remove it. The trick is to sharpen your blade before it desperately needs it. A freshly sharpened blade is maybe 75% as good as a new one. With a second sharpening, it is about 50% and a third 25%. I don't even try sharpening after three times. I use my sharpener but don't rely on it totally. A great blade sale is still a very good reason to stock up.

I prefer to buy new rotary blades in bulk from eBay -- much cheaper than purchasing in stores. For me, trying to sharpen old blades is a waste of time. The hand sharpeners help only a little; not really worth it for me.

I had thought about getting an electric blade sharpener, but after reading many, many negative reviews of more than one brand, I've decided to look for better prices on blades and stock up when I can. I have a couple other gadgets that I wish I had thought twice about buying...
