Estate Fabrics
#1
Yesterday, I told you about my husband's friend who offered me all the fabric from his sister's estate.
Here are the things my husband brought home .... I am so disappointed. I was hoping for some quilting cotton, but it is all very old (I say 1964 because we found a Workbasket magazine with that date) upholstery fabric that not only has the terrible smell of the old wood chest it was stored in but is quite brittle. Most of it is basically garbage. I will clean a couple pieces and if it doesn't fall apart, will make into shopping bags. The yarn, I will see if my daughter would like as she crochets.
Does anyone know of a way to get the "old" smell out of the polyester fiberfill? If I can't remove the smell, it is useless! I can't give a stuffed doll to a child with this smell!
I am thinking I will try to sell the hook rug kits and the tapestry at my garage sale this summer. The guy said we could do what-ever with the stuff.

I'm so sorry that there wasn't any quilting cotton. As for the smell, try baking soda, I've also heard/read that charcoal briquets work also, other than that I can't help you. Hopefully, someone else will be more help.

looks like one of those tapestry throws.
as far as the upholstery fabric, if it is usable and has that "shabby Chic" look, try selling it on ebay. I have done well with vintage fabric there. Also if there is any vintage juvenile prints.
BTW you are not allowed to use "Shabby Chic" on your ebay listing - it is copyrighted.

Sorry you didn't get more useful fabric and batting, but it was free, For the smell you could try putting it in a clean pillow case and then in the dryer on air with a couple of dryer sheet, haven't tried it myself, but it sounds good, by the way, when my mom passed, my brother sent me fabrics, guess what, no cotton, oh well, I will get it out and look again to get ideas, maybe dog blankets :D

I've heard that baking soda and newspapers will take the smell out of fabric (fiber fill too?) If you put the materials in a plastic bag with baking soda and newspaper and seal it up for a while it may work.
