Simplest idea that comes to my mind would be appliqueing leaf shapes onto a background...you could even trace leaves you find in your yard. Optionally you could add a border around outside. Simple pieced leaves would also make a nice mug rug.

Oh...oh....oh....had one from last year....go outside and find a great large leaf, either a oak or fig works welll.
