Friendship Star quilt block
I am starting on two twin quilts that alternate Friendship Star quilt blocks with solid blocks. I have a picture, and cutting directions, but no sewing directions. Based on the cutting directions, I think the block is made using a rectangle, and then sewing a square on the diagonal at one corner, and cutting off the excess behind the square -- sort of like 1/2 of a flying geese. Four of those pieces are made, and then sewn around the center square. I think the first seam would not be a complete seam, and then be finished at the end. (I know there's a name for that technique, but it escapes me right now.) Does that make any sense at all?
I've searched the internet, and cannot find these directions on-line, so I'm coming to the experts. Is there an advantage to this method? I was planning on making hst, and then sewing the nine-patch together.
Thanks!

Here you go. You can change the size by refiguring the measurements.

A friendship star is basically a 9-patch block. The first row is solid square - HST - solid square. The second row is HST - solid square - HST. And the third row is the same as the first. It is the placement of the HST that maks the star points. If you are making a 12" finished block, you would make your squares 4-1/2". If you're making it 9-1/2" unfinished, your squares will be 3-1/2". The Quilters Cache directions and picture will show you exactly how it's done.
