Grommet woes - HELP!
#1
I need help! I have finished a bag for my DD for Christmas, but the grommets I bought at the LQS don't work! It seems that the double thickness of fabric plus the batting is just too thick. I can (finally) snap the grommet in place, but a second later it POPS off! Are there "thicker" grommets out there somewhere? Should I try gluing them together? (would that even work???) ANY suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all!

There are grommets of all sizes - they are a pain to put in. Good luck. I've got one in a purse I made several years ago; it came off. I have yet to put it back on; it will ride around in the pocket until I'm ready to put it back - if ever. Check out SeattleFabrics.com & see if they have what you need. You can even call them if you like. I've always got good customer service from them. And you might find them locally in your town as well.

You might try tandy leather. The grommets used for leather applications are made for thick things. http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/home/home.aspx

I found Seattle Fabrics - but it looks like I would need to be making sails for a sailboat... couldn't really find the right size - (I've already cut the holes :( ) On the same Google search page was "Grommet World" - who would have known? - so I'm still searching there, too. But how thick is 3/32 of fabric??? :?

I bought grommets from the Home Depot. It comes with a cutting tool and a pounding tool. The cutting tool doesn't go through all the layers, so I use a very small scissor and cut the circle. Then I just hammer the grommets together. (Or I ask my 30 year old son to do it for me.) Remember to pound them from the inside, it makes a neater look on the outside of the bag.
