Help with Muslin/Joanns
I have been told that you can get prewashed muslin at Joanns. I went to my local store tonight and tried to find some, I didn't notice it marked as such on the end of any of the bolts, I asked 4 sales people and they all looked at me like I had lost my mind, one had no clue what muslin was, so I thought I would ask here. Can I purchase prewashed muslin and if so what would the bolt say. Thanks!!!

I don’t think it would be prewashed. Maybe preshrunk? However, that term can be used quite loosely. IOW, i would not rely on it being completely preshrunk. It could very well shrink more in a normal household washer and dryer. Also, preshrunk means there will still be chemicals in the fabric. The only way to be sure of getting rid of chemicals is to wash the fabric yourself.

JoAnn's does have many varieties of muslin, both online and in the store, but I've never seen any that were prewashed. I do see muslin items (usually for babies) online that say prewashed, but they also say to wash before using. Can you just buy regular muslin and wash it yourself? Why does it need to be prewashed?

I wonder if you are thinking of this preshrunk, permanent press muslin?

It comes in bleached and unbleached colors, both regular and wide. It has all 5-star reviews.

Good question. I bought some Joann muslin about a year ago and put in on the back of a lap quilt. It is so soft and cuddly. And now I cannot remember which type I bought. Went back and bought two different kinds and no where near the softness. Ugh How do you tell which type of muslin to buy?

I bought some excellent quality bleached muslin from Hobby Lobby several years ago. I used it up and not sure if they have it any more. It was whiter than new fallen snow and nice and thicker than any other.

I have worked at Joanns for 20 years and I have never heard of prewashed muslin. There are a few fabrics that list as preshrunk (not sure how they do that without prewashing) but never have I seen something marked prewashed.

I have frequently purchase the highest quality Muslin (bleached or unbleached) from JoAnn's and never have a problem with excessive shrinking. I often will wait for the 60% off coupon and buy a bolt of muslin because I use it so often. I even bought the 108" once and liked the product.
