Help with spool quilt pattern
#1
I found this quilt pattern at About.com. I have a good sized collection of reproduction fabrics and would love to make this full sized and not miniature.
http://quilting.about.com/od/quiltpa...ces_spools.htm
It calls for 2 7/8 half inch square triangles and 2 1/2 inch squares. I have a couple packs of white Moda charm packs that I would like to use. If I did, what size would the half square triangles need to be? My brain refuses to help me out. LOL!!
Any suggestions or help will be so greatly appreciated!!

You will need to make your half square triangles so they end up being 2-1/2 inches after they are sewn. The full blocks in the quilt would be 2-1/2 inches. The block is a 9 patch. Do you have the pattern or did it come off a website? There are several tutorials here on the board that tell how to make the HSTs as everyone has their favorite way. Hope my explanation doesn't confuse you more. I am a visual person where trying to explain things.

Charms are 5", right? You'll need to trim down the square part to 4.5" to match the HST's which you will also trim down to 4.5" after sewing on the diagonal. Finished size would be 4" per patch or a 12" block.
If I'm wrong and charms are 6"--your HST's will be trimmed down to 5.5" and you'll need to cut the squares down to 5.5". The finished block size will be 15".

For a 9 Patch style block, which this one is, it is easier to keep your measurements divisible by 3. A 10 inch block is doable but it makes your math all weird. Each square would need to be trimmed down to 3.84" I don't have a .84 mark on my ruler--LOL! For the least amount of waste, I would use the figures I gave earlier for a 5" charm which will result in a 12" finished (12.5" unfinished) block.

If your charms are 5" square, putting two together will make two 4" finished squares. Actually they will be a tad larger, but not much. You can trim them to 4.5" unfinished. Cut your squares that won't be used as HST's to 4.5" too, and everything will fit together.
General rule of thumb - if you want a certain size finished HST, add 7/8" and cut the starting squares that size. However, in practice it's easier to add 1" and trim the HST down when you're done.
