Help! translate pattern to paper piecing?
I do you hope you wonderful folks can help me. I have a beautiful medallion pattern that requires many Y seams, that look brutal to make. I'm thinking it would be easier to paper piece, but have never developed my own pattern. Can you tell me how to to this? How do I know the order of the pieces to deal with the y seams? Or, should I just bit the bullet and try to learn to do Y seams?

The trick to Y seams is to stop sewing exactly 1/4 inch from the edge with each seam. A lot of patterns that used to be done with Y seams like Tumbling Blocks and Lone Star, are now showing a seam in the piece of fabric that used to be Y seamed.

Y seams are kind of a pain, but not terribly hard to do. As Tartan said, the trick is stopping at the 1/4".
Maybe if you show us the pattern, we could help you figure out how to translate it for you! Good luck.
