I want to make a Barn Quilt for my LQS friend
I am very good friends with my LQS owner. I bought a Barn Quilt, 2'x2', and placed it over my double car garage. I love it and have had many compliments.
I want to commission the same man to make one for my friend who owns the LQS. I don't want her to know, as I want it to be a surprise and if she found out, she would make me take money for it.
I asked her what her favorite block was and she said 'Shoofly'. Well, a Shoofly is usually 2 colors and that would be boring. I asked her what other block she liked and she said a 'Log Cabin'. That, I could work with.
Her shop is in a house with cement stairs and a small covered porch. I thought a 1'x1' would be the right size. She loves deep rich fall colors, so I don't have to worry about the colors. Her house is brown, so that would work. I could make the center piece a maroon color instead of red - it would be close enough.
So, my question to you all is this: Am I overstepping my boundaries? Is this too personal and I should tell her what I'm doing and tell her I am paying for it and she only gets to choose the design and colors? Or should I just go ahead and do the Log Cabin in deep rich fall colors? I am leaning on telling her because if she doesn't like it, she will be afraid it will hurt my feelings and feel she has to hang it up even though she doesn't think it represents her store.
I just want to do this for her so badly! Times are tough for her as they are for other LQS owners and I want to show her my support! But I have a feeling she won't let me pay for it and then it won't be a gift from me to her.
Okay, please help me out here. Thank you.

Hi Jeanne.....if it's a gift - then she should not want to pay for it.... Give it with a note "in appreciation for the beauty you've added to my quilts".....don't know if you want to wait - but there is a National Barn Day... it's in July - 2nd sunday or something....google will tell you....then you could give it to her that day in celebration of National Barn Day and have a good giggle.....cuz who'da thunk there was a flippin' National Barn Day ????????????? and even stranger......WHY do i know that useless bit of information !!!???

I don't think you are overstepping your boundaries. If she is a good friend and you want to surprise her, do it! And how could she not like it? I want a barn quilt myself and wish I knew someone who could do it. My husband is handy, but not a painter. I can paint, but wouldn't know where to begin to design it.

She owns a quilt shop, so she loves all things quilts. And she is your friend, so she must like you. You know her best. It seems to me she will love a barn quilt and love you for thinking of her. I can't imagine she won't be thrilled. Has she seen your barn quilt? What did she think of it?

I think she will be delighted with the gift. I keep thinking that I want to make one for myself. If I made it maybe 2x2 feet, how hard could it be? I need you guys to talk me out of it. I'm thinking it is harder than it looks. Otherwise all of us would be making our own. I do have a barn, by the way, so I have a place to hang it.

Go for it! You have one of her favorite blocks, you know the colors she likes - she will be so surprised and thrilled. If you can wait I do like the idea of National Barn Day. If you can't wait that long, maybe you could give it to her earlier and then celebrate with a ceremony on that day! Maybe cookies and punch at the shop

I think it's a sweet idea, but I would go with her favorite block, the shoofly. It doesn't have to be just 2 colors - check out the ones in this blog - http://sharonstroud.blogspot.com/201...1_archive.html
