#1
I want to make some lap quilts to take to the nursing home that my Grandmother is in but I don't know how to big to make them. Does anyone know what the standard size is for a lap quilt?
Thanks

You might call the nursing home and ask them. When our (Warrensburg!) Extension Homemaker Association group made them for nursing homes, they told us what size to make. They also asked us to put ties on the corners so they could be fastened to the wheelchairs and not slide off.

I made one for my Dad it was 40 x 50 I put ties in the corner but also in the middle of the sides ( Hes always so cold) This way I tied at the bottom (so it wouldn't get stuck in the wheels) the middle to keep tight on lap and when hes cold I bring it up and tie to back of chair to keep his chest warm

When I make them, I make them the WIF and then long enough to fit over toes, usually 50 or 55." I like to see them able to tuck into the sides of the chairs and or to use to cover legs and arms if lying in bed.
I'm going to share y'all's suggestion of the ties with the nursing home here close to me that I make them for, that's a great idea. Never thought of it nor have I seen them, bet the VA Hospitals would like that, too.

Here is a picture of the lap quilt I made my m-in-law, I attached a pocket that is only sewn on at the top before the binding. I just took a piece of fabric & doubled it & folded it part way up & stitched a pocket for her to keep her treasures in. I made one for my own Mom too and made sure to put the pocket on the left side so she could reach it with her usable right arm.
If you click on the picture, it'll enlarge it on my webshots page.

Thank you all for the info. I had never thought about putting the ties on it but that is a wonderful idea. I have one almost complete (I almost said the f word) for my Grandma. I am made a rag lap quilt for her. I have all of the sewing done and am cutting the snips. After I get this one done I am going to make some for her friends there.
