In my former shop in Dallas TX, speaking of Mettler threads, we sold the 50 weight for piecing and the 40 weight for machine/hand quilting afterwards. Generally.

A 40 is much thicker and your seam allowances will be more bulky and might not measure 1/4". I would do like Jan said and use a 50 or even 60 on the piecing. I found Master Piece by Superior and just love it now! It is very fine and strong.
