My First Attempt at Quilting
#1
Hi! I am new to the Quilting Board and to quilting. I am attempting to piece my first quilt (a wallhanging) and am already questioning myself?! I have been a nervous wreck just cutting the pieces out! Any suggestions on this piece? You won't hurt my feelings. A few of my main questions are....is the purple fabric too bright?....should I "break up" the ivory 4 corners with a coordinating ivory with color?....and also, I was planning on yet another border around each bird panel in it's own color, but now I am thinking that would be too much?
Suggestions?
Thanks!

I like what you have. I am fairly new also and will be watching this thread to see what the more experienced quilters suggest....but, to me, it looks really good. I don't think the purple is too bright. Your birds are just beautiful!
If you are thinking of another border around each bird, take a picture of this one and lay it out with your other idea. Sometimes looking at pictures makes the decision easier.

I think it looks great as is. :) Only thing I would change is the green border pieces that close to each other? In the top right hand side and the bottom middle? That being said, you dont want the greens to meet with the other block either I would guess... so maybe leave well enough alone?? lol... :)
The additional border would be pretty maybe? And that would also break up the ivory corners? But hard to tell with out looking... :)

I have the same fabric. Pretty birds. Question: Why are you doing double sashing? I would take one of the rows of sashing out between the rows.SO for me the order would be sashing - bird square - sashing - bird square.....OF course it is your top so if you like it as is, that certainly works.

Hello and welcome! I like it just the way that it is. If you have enough of the background color of what the birds are on (green) then see how you like it as an additional border once you put it all together. Adding borders is always a good way to enlarge a quilt that you otherwise don't have enough fabric to make bigger. Or you could add more borders of some of the other fabric in the quilt. And no, the purple looks good. It adds some color other than the earth tones. Very nice job. Each quilt you make it will get easier to cut into that fabric. There are no mistakes in quilting. Just a chance to learn and expand our horizons. Cheryl

I think you are doing great. I think the purple is fine and not too bright. The hardest part for me is laying out the project and rearranging the pattern a 100 times...many nights staying up too late just to rearrange one more time. You might try MadQuilter's idea of one sashing between the birds and see if that strikes your fancy. I can't wait to see the finished piece.
Have fun with it!
