Here is the link to Shirley Botsford's book, which I hear, is the best available information for making a quilt from neckties.
http://www.amazon.com/Shirley-Botsfords-Daddys-Ties-Keepsake/dp/0801985218
and here is th elink to half.com offering her book.

I find buying some of these books are very helpful. Ties are an entirely different fabric source. This will not be like cutting strips of fabric.
Here is an interesting site with discussion you might want to read, especially planning for the future, and washing the quilt.

I am sure more searches can be done. These are a few. Use your search engine for more results.

When using my Dad's ties, I hand washed them all, and discarded any that didn't behave. Then I clipped the stitches to lay the fabric flat, remember most ties are cut on the bias so you need to be watchful not to stretch them. I made a mini storm-at-sea & used one of his poly/cotton blue shirts as the background. I think you could use any pattern successfully, but ones sewn to a foundation might be easier to keep from stretching.

i made several quilts out of ties. i washed them all by hand and hung them outside to dry. took all seams and insides out. then i used light weight fusible interfacing on the backs of the ties so they did not stretch. i use them just like regular fabric and picked a pattern i liked. also used cut up suits of different colors to go with them as background. i am trying to figure out how to post pictures. these were ties from my father and brother who have passed away. i made 4 and gave to my remaining brothers. the book daddy's ties is a good one for inspiration. just go for it and experiment.

I have been searching too because I started colectiong ties at garage sales a couple of years ago. Ties are not being worn much any more so there are lots of ties out there for sale. I probably have up to 400 ties now. And so many of them are gorgeous made out of silk and oh gee just out standing. Anyway I came across this blog looking for things to do with the ties. :D
Here is a neck tie blog. Check it out. :D

Great place that I found neckties is at http://tiecoon.com/newwinter08jonvan...ecktie236.aspx . Their ties are cheap at $5, but I called them and they have ties as low as .60 cents! Give them a call and they are a great help
