Need help with pattern
I am trying to make a quilt pattern called "Repeating Crosses." Following the directions has not worked so far. The directions call for sewing a light and dark strip together, the resulting strip is now 3.5" wide. She then has you measure 7.25" across the base of the triangle and cut 45 degree angles. When I do that, the triangles have flat tops. To have the point intact, the base must be closer to 7". Just wondered if anyone else had made this pattern.
Thanks for any assistance.

Do the triangles still have flat tops after you've sewn them into the quilt? What I'm saying is, are you remembering that the seam allowance will take up some fabric, and the points might be there once the quilt is assembled into a top.

Check out page 2 of this post, it might help

I have the same book, so I'm looking at the diagram they give. It clearly shows that you have the points top and bottom.
Looking at the quilt from a mathematical perspective, the block is 12" finished. That means each quarter section is 6" finished. That means each QST section (consisting of a wedge from the strip made of two fabrics) has a base of 6" finished, or 6+1.25"=7.25" unfinished. So the directions are half right, in that the base of the triangles you're cutting should be 7.25". (I had some more text here before I edited, but it was wrong!!!) The height of the strip should be half of the 7.25" width of the base, which would be 3.625". But your strips are only 3.5", so your tips are being cut off. To fix this and still use the 3.5" strips, your base should be 7" instead of 7.25". Your block will then be a little smaller, but not much.
However... that said, I probably wouldn't use this block unless I starched the heck out of the strips first. Once you cut those triangles, all you have are bias edges, prone to stretching.

she is correct....I drew this out on paper and while the tip is cut off a bit, the intersection of the seams on the two side angles hits right at the quarter inch mark...what the author appears to be doing is cutting off your dog ears (or rabbit ears) as you cut your triangles - that means you don't have to trim them off before using your quarter inch foot.

I made one and I used a ruler for it that was a triangle and flipped it over each time I cut. No matter how perfectly I had originally cut and sewn, some of the points were blunt and some were not. I just did a bit of pulling and tugging as I went. In the end, I think it came out well anyway.
