Need help shopping downtown LA for quilting fabrics
My friend wants to go to downtown Los Angeles to shop for quilting fabric. The only time I have shopped for fabric in LA was for wedding attire, and I wasn't that impressed. At that time, I had seen some quilting cotton, but the prices were almost the same as the LQS's. Can anyone tell me where to find shops in downtown LA for quilter's fabric, and maybe at better prices than local stores?
Thank you in advance for any information you can give!!

She must be thinking of the LA Fashion District AKA: Garment District. It has a lot fabric stores but it will be a lot of walking and parking can be a pain. What about going a little further south to Anaheim to M&L Fabrics? It looks wonderful, haven't gone up there yet.

You can google LA Fashion District, but here is one http://www.fashiondistrict.org/
Usually they are in the same area. I used to have a map that showed them...bet that in online too.
Have fun!

I know there was an article about sewing fabrics in LA this past winter/spring? Unfortunately, I don't remember which magazine and I can't find my copy. Darn.
I would be interested if anyone on the QB knows which article I mean. I am looking to doing more clothing sewing in the future and have a brother who lives in LA area.
I would appreciate a PM if anyone can help me on this one.

I frequently shop downtown LA for fabrics. The shop I most frequent is Levines on Maple. It is in the center of the fabric area. Their prices are comparable to my local quilt store but the selection is very large. Across the street from their fabric store is their store for home dec fabrics. Above this store is their discount area called The Loft. It is a jumble of all types of fabrics. The last time I was there the prices in The Loft was $1.00 per pound. You have to search but you can find treasures. Take the 110 freeway and exit on 9th street. keep going until you come to Maple and turn south. Levines has their own parking lot. The fabic area downtown is busiest on the weekends. If you can go during the week the crowds are less. Hope you have a great time and find many jewels.

I was in LA last year, and went to Levines. They had a tons of quilting fabric in their main store. Prices were about the same as LQS. I went to their loft, and didn't have the patience to go through all their boxes. I found loads of cones of embroidery thread for almost nothing. They have a parking lot next to their store, but the parking was VERY expensive, and you paid by the 15 minutes unless you bought over $50. I am sure it wasn't worth it.. I would go to M&L instead.
