I cannot believe that a fellow quilter/teacher/artist was forced to ruin her quilts for one customs agent..Outrageous!

OH MY how horrible :shock: I agree with what others said in her blog , if she shipped them, they could still be sold . Sounds like an agent was having a bad day and needs to be reported . At least to get to the bottom of it and find out proper procedure

That's horrendous!! I would have turned around not gone. I hope she's able to find something that will take it out. I know hairspray on ink works, but I don't know if it works on a felt tip pen. Magic eraser works on taking off permanent marker off walls. OMG!!! Can't even phantom having this happen.

Evidently this AGENT didn't know how valuable quilts were nor knew nothing about QUILTING. I would have turned around since missing the flight before DEFACING one of my quilts(and NO way are in the category of these exquisite quilts). I can only hope that she is able to find more fabric to repair the damage that has been done. I hope this doesn't scar her from traveling to the states again. This agent may have been doing his job, but it seems like another alternative solution could have been used to handle the problem they seemed to have with quilts.

This should be reported to US Customers Department in Washington, D.C. and have to pay for the damages . This so-called agent should be held responsible for their actions and fired for having her to write on her quilt.

I guess this foolishness and lack of respect is happening on both sides of the border.
The incident of the defacing was actually by a US Customs official, not Canadian as stated in the topic heading, but in the posting from Bonnie K Hunter cancelling her Canadian teaching trips she did have some difficulty with Canadian Customs.
Looks like it depends which country is your home. Americans get hassled by Canadian customs and as a Canadian although I'd love to travel to the US someday I am frankly terrified by the horror stories I've heard of US Customs.
Bummer all round. I certainly agree that US Customs should be liable for the defacement of the quilts in question. Surely there's an easier way. With digital cameras and the internet it seems that pictures could be taken of each quilt on the way into or out of the country and the pictures compared to the 'real thing' on the way back. Shouldn't matter which point of entry because digital pictures are only a mouse click away from anywhere. Shame on both our Customs departments.
