There are a variety of good quilting magazines available-they are less expensive than buying most of the books in quilting shops. Many are also available on-line for free. I have a site that always has beginner-friendly patterns for free-including good tips etc. Check it out-

You might try your public library. I am very lucky because our head librarian is a quilter and has money in the budget slated just for quilting books. We also have access to any library in the county and many of them have large quiting communities so the selection is quite good. We can order our books on the computer then just pick them up at the library. They email you when they come in.
