Planning on my first quilt
Hi, I haven't posted much but I read things since I've joined. As 66 yrs old man and new to this as it is my plan is to make my son who's 37 now, single. I'm part of a quilting group at my church so I've been learning from some 20 and 30 year women, really helpful. Is it out of my league to consider doing a granny patchwork quilt. skip the HST for now, lol oh I might add a few here and there. But I'd like to make a queen size with finished 6" squares. I saw a grandmother quilt with various material squares, so I was thinking of a charm pack, but I'd want a good quality cotton, oh it's so confusing. I'm just asking if its doable. I have all the tools I need and can make good squares. I know there's a lot more to it that that, but I'm very willing and I "can" do it. I just saw this quilt that looked like something you hand down. and I thought, no one cares if a man or a women makes it, it's an heirloom for a long time. Any thoughts will be appreciated.
Thank you, Dale

I am a relatively new quilter, too (and I'm a few years older than you). I've made two quilts so far and am contempating my third one. My first two were more twin size, but we are expanding our long arm to 10 ft, so the next one will be a queen size. I am anxious to use the new, longer table, so I will do a simpler design this time - something like a rail fence.
The first photo below is a design I'm leaning toward. It's only 3 colors and if you use Jelly Rolls, each block ends up at 6" finished. (I will probably use wider strips to make my blocks bigger.) I like the idea that each block is the same.
The second photo is my second quilt. It is also a "rail fence" type (just strips sewn together to make blocks). It actually went together pretty quickly as well.
These are just some ideas. I think you are smart to keep your first quilt sort of simple. It's nice to see quick progress early.

Welcome to the board from down the road in Dallas. I started quilting at about your age, too. I had sewn clothes as a teenager, so had some experience with sewing. I found lots of support from a local quilt shop that has since closed.
Two things I've gotten better at is cutting and the 1/4" seam. Those were the two things that were not as good as I wished in my first quilt. Two things that helped were a weight on my ruler and watching a the Jordan's cut fabric and a 1/4" foot for my sewing machine.
My first quilt was a disappearing nine patch. I used two charm packs (5" precut squares) for the focus fabric and solid blue and white fabric. I had it quilted by the same quilt shop who helped. It wasn't perfect, but I was still very pleased.

I'm making a couple assumptions here, but I'm guessing a granny patchwork quilt is one made with only squares, and that the women in his church group have been quilting for 20-30 years.
Dale, you can certainly do it. I think it's great that you are starting to quilt at your age, the same age at which I started. I'm 80 now and have made over 100 quilts. Good luck on your new adventure.

I was wondering if a granny patchwork quilt is the one that looks like crocheted granny squares, like this one?

I'll post the link to the one I saw, It's just the link is long, so if its not ok, I'll understand. It's one I saw for sale on Etsy.
Please note, I do not want to do the hand tied like this one, but the pattern and coloring is what, well caught my eye.
