Pls help - my sewing maching won't sew!
#1
I have a Riccar if that helps at all. I'm not sure exactly how to explain it, but bottom line is that it won't stitch! It either will catch and the needle won't move, or it "sews" - with a clunk or two - but no stitches are in the fabric. I've taken the bobbin out repeatedly - this has happened before recently, but once I removed a stray thread it was back to normal. I can't find any threads this time though. Should I remove the cover plate to see if anything is in there?

Try rethreading the top of the machine, try winding another bobbin , put in a new needle. Clean out the bobbin area with your cleaning brush . These are the things I would try . Hope something clicks soon for you , i hate when my machine gets cranky

I haev an old Riccar as well....it was my first machine....your machine must be old as well..have you oiled it ...mine had several spots that required oil every time I used it??
if you don't oil it and have it maintained it will cease up.

Actually it had just been oiled not very long ago. I think it's "fixed" now though - dh pulled out a large wad of thread - and it still didn't work, I tried again, pulled out one more thread and now it seems to work. At least it stitched. And no clunking. I think the little wire thing on the tension is bent - the end of the wire was rubbing on the dial. I'm sure that didn't help. I did push it back some. Not sure how that happened, but I do have a 5yo. Although he really is good about not touching things...
I do have a friend that does sewing machine repair, but we have a huge snowstorm coming tomorrow - I was all excited about being shut in and having guilt-free sewing time! It better stay working now!

Well, the online weather site says that from 6pm tonight until 8am on Wed we have between 90% & 100% (mostly the 100%) chance of continued snow. Dh plows. And I always worry. (older truck, blowing white-out conditions, accidents, etc - I find something to worry about!) - so thinking about which fabric piece will fit next is a good thing.

I also am snowed in. So I can relate to your sewing days planned. I have been fixing a very old angel with new clothing. She is mechanical and everything works, even her wings flap. I have a few more wall hangings to finish up. Then the holiday sewing will be done! Oh yea!
I am so glad you got the machine fixed so you can sew. :D It is very frustrating to have a machine mess up.

I like the pic of the snow. We are snowed in as well. Only problem... my good sewing machine is not at home right now. So I get to do all the other things needed, and hope for a time Thursday to rescue the machine
