Is this the type of quilt you are asking about?

Here's one that has a combo of light/dark, all darks and all lights to make the design that looks sort of log-cabin-ish on first glance. https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C...oLVjRx2yDeaTM:

I generally start by putting a strip down the middle. You can make this consistent throughout your blocks (light or dark) or you can make them all different. Just depends on the final look you want. Give it a try! I usually make my papers 8.5" square because that's how wide the paper is and I want squares. But you can make them smaller or larger, or even rectangular. It's fun!

Congrats on becoming a Grandma! I am in the process of making a string quilt on muslin right now.It has a tone on tone star in the center of what I will call a 9-patch, 5 inch string block in the corners and a chevron in the 4 position, all of which causes bulky seams. I am pressing them open, but am now wondering how I will quilt it. So you might want to think about that as you decide which route to go. I don't know if this will help you or not.

If you use a consistent color on the center diagonal, it ends up almost looking like it's sashed.
