Purse/ bag Closures
What do you use for purse/bags/totes closures, such as snaps (what kind), ties or? This is regarding any closure other than zippers. Thanks for any and all suggestions.

Thank you for posting this thread. I have wondered the same thing. I am curious as to the source for some of the hardware I've seen on some of the bag pictures that board members have posted. Where do you buy fasteners, swivel hooks, etc?
I know how to install grommets, but have no clue about any fasteners.

I like to use the magnetic purse closures. They are similar to a very large snap, but are magnetic instead. They fasten on by inserting 2 prongs through the fabric (you must reinforce it first), and bending the prongs over a kind of a washer-like metal piece on the inside. Joann's carries them and if you buy them with a half off coupon, the price isn't too bad for a package of them.

I use the magnetic closures I get at Joann's and also make a loop with fabric and a lovely button, sometimes I will use both. Anything BUT a zipper! The loops are easy-start with a piece of matching fabric cut about 6-7" x 1 1/2" and fold like double fold binding. Stitch along long folded side. Sew both raw ends side by side on the back side of the outside bag (before sewing lining in and stitching the top) in the center, raw ends of purse top and raw ends of loop together, extending loop ends about 1/4" beyond edge of purse top. Be sure your loop is handing down on the outside of the bag back. Now, just tack in place and it will be sewn into the top seam when you sew your lining in. After, bring loop around the front and match up where your button goes. Hope this is clear.

I have made and sold hundreds of purses over the years. I use the magnetic snaps for the most part. Most everyone can use them, even my "sweet little ladies" that order purses from me often. They are neat and forgiving, if you are off a little bit with your match up....you can buy them in different finishes to enhance the purses...sort of like an embellisment. You can order them on line or buy them in fabric stores. Be aware of the prices! I prefer the 18mm (3/4") magnetic snaps. JoAnns has a better price than Hancocks or WalMart or even Hobby Lobby and if you use a coupon...BETTER STILL! When I order on line....it's better to order in bulk obviously. I'm sure there might be better places , but I use umei....email: [email protected], Home page: http://www.umei.com
You will have to call or fax an order to them tho due to price changes. Even if you don't order from them, go to their web site and see what accessories are available for purse making...some good stuff there.
Good luck!

BTW....I only use the zippers on the inside along with pockets all around! My customers and I love them! No searching in the bottom of your purse for anything! A place for everything and everything in it's place!
