Quiltling a purse
Hi
I am more of a reader then a contributor on this board. I do have a question. I am making a purse that I would like to quilt. This pattern does not call for quilting. How much should I increase the pattern to allow for the shrinkage of size due to the quilting? Hope this makes some kind of sense.
I am starting to do a little quilting but am very new to this.
Thank you for any info you can provide

What you may want to do is quilt your fabric before cutting out the pattern. It is easier to quilt a larger piece of fabric than trying to quilt an odd shape and size. Lay your pattern on the fabric to get an idea how large a piece to quilt and add a few inches for shrinkage due to quilting.

I made a jacket and quilted the fabric with cross hatching. I quilted it and then cut the pattern out. Your pattern pieces will be more accurate if you do it this way and you wont have to worry. What I did do instead of quilting the 4 whole yards was lay the pieces down in sections like the both pieces for the arm and allowed a generous amount around it and then cut that large piece, quilt it and then laid the pattern back down and cut them out accurately. You may not need to do this since it's a purse but since I was making a jacket it made it more manageable to do it in sections making sure it was large enough for the peices but trying not to waste too much fabric. I have a little bit of frugalness in me. I hope this helps. Good luck with your project. By the way, doing it in sections was the idea of my teacher/friend, I didn't come up with it but it sure made it easier.

I don't know how big your bag is, but I make the medium bow tucks bag all the time and quilt a pattern over the entire thing. I never get more than 1/4" of shrink, but I do cut the pieces about 1" larger then trim after quilting. Do use a larger stitch.
