Saw this mentioned on another thread and checked it out. This is a great idea. Has anyone done this? Here is the link to the web site

My group has made 6 quilts and sent them off. You dont get much feedback is the only problem. You do have to sent the quilt to a longarm person who does it for free. So lots of sending out and back costs.
We finally contacted the Veterans organization here in Phoenix and gave our last quilt to a wounded soldier who lives locally.
He was wonderful, it was great to meet him and give him a quilt.
We made sure he wanted to meet with us as some do not.
But we like giving to wounded from our state.

Yes, my friend, Cindy and I are involved in the Quilts of Valor. Cindy has made and sent 20, I am working on #44. She makes two a month, I make one a week.
Cindy has talked to and received mail from an injured nurse. She told Cindy the reason so many of the recipients do not contact the maker is because they do not want to answer questions about how they were injured and about their injuried.
I have heard from family members only. I would love to hear from more and believe that eventually I will near from more. However, I also believe the injured's job is to get well and I just hope the quilts help in some way for them to achieve this knowing we care.
Incidentally, if you go to QOVF.org, you will learn that there are almost 70,000 injured so bady that they cannot return to combat and so far, only 15,000 quilts have been distributed.
Please help. It really is rewarding work. "Support Our Troops!"

Gives me goose bumps!
I am doing a mystery quilt for QOV - it's not too late to do one if you want to - all the clues are still there. You only make the top & QOV does the rest. Here's the link:

No, I haven't donated a quilt to them, but expressed an interest in donating one in the future. Might do my designs in patriotic colors.
Do you have to send a top to a long arm quilter or can you just quilt it yourself?

My mom made the Independence quilt from Marcia Hohn's website a couple years ago, but she never finished it.
I wonder if I could talk her into donating it to that site.
I'll ask her.
Here's the page with the quilt design.

Goddess:
No, you do not have to send to a longarm quilter. I quilt my own and the blessing of doing these quilts, my free-motion quilting is getting so good. And, owing to the cost of shipping back and forth, you are better off doing all of the work yourself.
When I do the binding, I stitch on the backside first. Press ther binding on the back side. Press again on the top side (sometimes the raw edges get funky). Then you can use a decorative stitch as you turn the edges under. This makes the binding procedure easier. AND, I have found a red/white/blue varigated thread which I use for the binding as well as on the applique stars.
Thanks. Suzanne

Hi everyone, I am the Region 7 Coordinator for the Quilts of Valor Foundation. My region is Arkansas, Louisiana, Missouri, and Mississippi. The United States has 10 regions and each region has a Coordinator. Our volunteer position is to inform people of the Quilts of Valor Foundation and what it does. The foundation's website encourages volunteer longarmers and piecers to sign up. Then they will team up piecers and longarmers together. Yes, there is a lt of communications and mailings back and forth but the idea is teamwork. We all want to support our troops. It is entirely possible to make a quilt and quilt it yourself and request a recipitent from the Fundation. There is a place onthe website to do that too. But you may also give it to a soldier of your choice. If you hae any questions after you have been to the web site, feel free to contact me at reg7qovf.org
