Raw edge applique?

Raw edge applique?
Hi everyone, I was given many small samples of velveteen and would like to use them for raw edge applique in a mixed fiber technique using wool, cotton and the velvet. I know I can wash the wool (sort of felt it) to make it not fray but how do I keep the velvet from fraying. Is there a product to iron onto the back? Also what thread do I use to machine applique using the buttonhole stitch when you want to see the stitches. All answers are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You can use embroidery thread like Isacord etc. if you want a sheen or a cotton thread if you don't. I've never quilted or appliqued with velvet, but you could do a sample using a fusible to see if this stops the fraying.

I'm not sure you would want to use fusible on velveteen. You have to iron it on the back and I'm not sure that wouldn't permanently crush the nap on the velveteen. I think you may be able to use Fray Check around te edges to help keep it from fraying and I would probably use a thin layer of fabric glue, not quite to the edges, to adhere it to the background. Then after it dries, you would be able to stitch around it using whichever stitch and thread you like.
