Ricky Tims Flying Geese

Has anyone used his method? Do you quilt over the whole thing, even the flying geese? Do you like his method, or do you prefer the "flat" flying geese? Thanks.

is the like the 10 minute block. i did a quilt with regular 10 minute blocks and also had some flying geese because i didn't open the inserted square all the way. you can fold the edges back and stitch them down or not. if sending to a long arm quilter, you might tell her or him and see what is necessary. I still make my geese the old fashioned way most times.

A year or so ago, I did a Christmas lap size quilt with three rows of flying geese going in different directions using Ricky's method and size 8" flying geese. I too did not like the pockets, so I sewed them shut when quilting. It was a very fast way of making flying geese but it also made for very heavy quilt top. I wasn't smart enough to roll the sides down like a cathedral window to make a different design at the time. But I still have it and it holds up well. Next time I want to make one, I will use the old fashion method, takes less fabric.

Um, I don't really like the pockets. Even if you quilted over them, it doesn't seem like the quilt would have the same look. There are so many methods for making flying geese. I find the easiest one for me is to use rectangles and squares, sew the squares to the ends of the rectangle with a diagonal seam and then flip the triangles up and press. You can chain piece your heart out!

This method was not created by Ricky, he just discovered it and shared it. I made a flannel quilt 20 years ago using this method. I took a class several years ago with Jackie Robinson and it a class where all the blocks were 3d. She said these methods were from the 1800s. "something old is new again"!
