the first one i made was scrappy, you just have to pay attention to light, medium, dark placement so the rings stand out...it turned out really well and was fun...i didn't do well distinguishing between my lights/mediums they blend in but they stand out from the darks so it's ok...but large areas blend with no distinguishing rings around it.

I have a scrappy lone star that my grandmother made maybe 60 or 70 years ago. It dose not have color grading. Just a big scrappy star. Of course I think its beautiful. Grandma told me it was grandpa's favorite. I am so lucky to have it. So, yes, you can do scrappy. Mine was all hand pieced one diamond at a time.
