Wow...I am not sure if you would use a ball point needle on these? You could try both regular and ball point on a sample piece, 2 layer of your silk and batting too, see which looks/works best.
I would think you could use any thread, that would be a personal preference.

Ohhhh wow.... Can you describe the quilt top? Is it like a crazy quilt? Lots of embroidery or embellishments? A Picture would be awesome...and you will get way more feedback :D:D:D
There have been a number of discussions here on whether to complete old quilt tops or not...
Some say NO due to the fact they are/could be to fragile to handle that much.
Some say No because it usually will diminish its value.
Some say Yes, finish it so that it may be used... Just something to think about :wink:
