I'm working on one now for a wedding gift...Make is about the length of a twin(mine is only 6 ft). Width is your choice, I like it to be double the width of the sofa cushions at least, got to be able to wrap up in it.
I'm not going all out on this one due to the fact that thier dog will probably eat this quilt...

I use the term lap quilt rather loosely... It can be anywhere from a 50 X 72 inch down to one that would just cover the lap and legs. I make them to drape on the back of the couch while not being used.

I'm with Amma. I use the term "lap quilt" in regards to any quilt that doesn't go to the bed. Lap size can be anything from fitting just to cover legs/feet or to cover an entire body. Mine fold up over the chairs, couch, loveseat...get folded and tossed in the corner...you name it...

I use mine and the size requirement for me is big enough to curl up in while making like a couch potato. So I guess that would be about the same as a twin size quilt?? Like everyone else, I like it long enough that it will cover me while in my favorite position (prone) and wide enough to cover me side to side. And I use them and when it gets REALLY cold they sometimes migrate up to the bed as an additional layer.
