The directions don't say what size the finished quilt is. But there are 24 squares that finish at 1.5" in each direction. So, 24 x 1.5" = 36". Then there are borders added. The borders are 3 1.5" finished size squares, and there are 2 sides in each direction, so 2 x 3 x 1.5" = 9" of border, so the quilt finishes at 36" +9" = 45" x 45".
The quilt is made by making 2" strip sets, cutting them into 2" strips. Then you can sew in tubes, and unsew one color up each time, or move one square to the bottom of the strip, then 2 squares to the bottom of the strip, .... and that makes the pattern that you see.

If you go to Picnic around the world/favquilts it will give you a pattern that is made in blocks and is much easier to understand. I have not made it yet, but it makes a 63"x63" quilt without borders.

Bonnie Hunter has a picture tutorial on Trip Around The World as well as Scrappy Trip Around The World listed on her site on the right hand side of the screen. I have found her tutorials to be great and easy to follow. Her site is www.quiltville.com and she also has a blog. I have put her Scrappy Trip Around The World on my scrap list to do.

There is another method to it I keep finding sew all strips them make a loop and unstitching them I joined a group called justhands-on. And they show you how this cylinder method works look at the YouTube video she made. Type in trip around the world quilt patterns and a few pop up and show this better method
