What to back a crazy quilt with?
#1
So I finished replacing/covering the blown silk pieces on my crazy quilt top and now it's ready to be finished. I plan to do an envelope backing, then tie it. (I have batting, but haven't decided whether to use it or not.)
The part I'm stuck on is what to back it with? I thought about velvet or velveteen, but that can be be hot to nap under, and I've never met a velvet that didn't stain easily. I know flannel is often the traditional thing, but it doesn't seem to 'match' a crazy quilt, if that makes sense. Although I suppose with a crazy quilt, the only rule is anything goes. My next thought was baby corduroy, but I'm having a hard time finding it in both dark colors and wide sizes. (the top is 50" x 70") I'm trying to avoid just plain cotton, but will go that route if I need to.
I'd like a dark color (ideally, steel/battleship gray) and it needs to be comfy to nap under. Please, hit me with any suggestions, or recommendations!

what about a 'flannel back satin', washable ! I make pillowcases out of it all the time. The other thought is I do prefer a print for any backing of any quilt. The print can hide an multiple of sins, caused by the binding, batting, quilting and general use......

Ooh, I hadn't thought about flannel-backed satin! Home dec is a nifty idea too. The girl at Hancock's was pushing for flannel, but didn't have any colors other than white and natural.
Guess it's time for a fabric shop trawl...
