I have made rag quilts with flannel and corduroy, and the corduroy does rag - beautifully! This is what I would suggest too. I make my rag quilts with 3 layers of flannel, mixing in corduroy on top, and no batting. No need to sew an X through the squares since all the layers are caught in the piecing.

Lots of 2 color quilts out there. My personal favorite, yes, I'll say it again LOL is the simple 9 patch with snow ball. This particular one is 6.5" snowballs and 2.5" 9 patch.

Colors are wonderful, my first though was a rag quilt, and if it is not too cold where you are no batting. Let us see what you do with it. Maybe a rag quilt with the colors alternated so both side are about the same.
