What size do you make for a childs quilt?
I am making my granddaughter a quilt. She is almost 4. Not sure what size to make. This will be a play/nap quilt, not for a bed. Suggestions for what size are needed. Thanks.

You can do whatever size you like. I usually go with 3 blocks wide by 4 blocks long. If the blocks are about 12 inches the quilt top ends up being about 36X40 or larger depending on if you add sashing or borders. Do you want it small enough for her to haul around? If so reduce the use.

My then 11 year old grandson and I made a quilt for his soon to be born nephew. I planned about 40" square. He said, "No. We need to make it bigger so he can use it longer!" So we made it bigger - well, mostly a lot longer.
Now, I listen to his voice in my head when I make a small childs quilt, and try to make them about 50" square at least. I do use the lightweight fleece that you can buy at Walmart as batting, though, because it makes the quilt feel both softer and lighter when dragged around by a little one.

I would go 60 x 60 so she can use it as she grows older then it can become a quilt to read with, watch tv, talk to new friends on phone when she is a teen. :-) My daughter still has her orginial quilt balled up on her bed and gets very cranky when you try to put it up. She got it when she was 4 and she is 13 now with 2 other quilts that are just not as good as her "comfy" one.

Found out my GGD loves dolly quilts for her babies. I had a quilt top that just could not add to, so made a small doll quilt out of it. Bought her a princess baby doll to go with it and it was a huge hit. It was so much fun watching her lay it out and putting baby under it with pillows.
