Why I make scrappies I think.

I love scrappy quilts! Mostly I use them as donations, but I am currently making one for my Granddaughter. It is in all girly colors and I'm doing it in 2 1/2"squares, sewing it to 12pieces X 12 squares...so as I gather the scraps I am putting them into the pieces....when I have enough, will join all the smaller squares.

I agree with Deedum - doing a scrappy is easier and more relaxing as there is less to think bout and you can just enjoy sewing. I like to do crumbs because there is less thought, very easy and the results always look great! - just like putting a puzzle together.

I love scrappies for so many of the reasons given previously. I love seeing fabrics that have become part of other quilts, I love the variety of directions the fabrics take in new quilts. I love the freedom of trying new blocks and then putting them together. I like variety and sometimes quilts are repetative in making the same block over and over. If it is with different fabric that helps change it up as you see the block come together. I also like that when I don't want to sew, I can cut scraps into pieces for a scrappy. Right now I have a nice box full of 2 inch pieces that will be a scrappy around the world someday. I love fabric and scrappies are just another form of play and creativity.

Scrap quilts for me are enchanting. It amazes me how each and every piece of fabric fits in perfectly. When I began to get interested in quilt making I was generously given fabric by several people who were no longer going to be quilting because of medical reasons and so began my journey with nothing but scraps. I very seldom buy fabrics unless at a garage sale. I also think that working with scraps takes away some of the tension, they are meant to be used for love and enjoyment.

All of the above plus just love all the colors. Color is what quilting is all about for me. One other reason is the way I buy fabric. I very rarely buy enough fabric to complete a color planned quilt, so even if am cutting yardage rather than using scraps, I use a lot of different fabrics.

My mom's cousin taught me how to sew cloths. She used the scraps for quilts. As my children were growing up and I made their cloths I saved the scraps to "someday" make a quilt. I recently made scrap quilts for my 2 oldest and each of them recognized fabrics from the past in them. I am always receiving scraps from people who no longer sew. I have a sister who makes cloths and always threw away the scraps. Now she saves them for me. She's not wasting and it is free for me.
I think people are more inclined to use a scrappy quilt rather than "saving" it for "special" use. They don't feel "guilty" if it gets worn out.

I love scrappies too, and for a lot of the same reasons as you, deedum!
At work I am a programmer so as you can imagine...lots of precision, lots of rules, lots of details that must be explored, tested, documented...
In my sewing room....sometimes I bring that focus and precision to bear, and other times....it's scrappy funtime!!
Plus I like to buy lots of small pieces of fabric....fabric that I "can't live without" but can't afford the space (or dollars) to buy six yards at a whack. I treat myself to fat quarters and half-yards all the time so I have a huge variety of small pieces of fabric...perfect for scrappy quilts!
Right now my favorite quilt is a scrappy made from the bits and pieces left over from all of the quilts I made as Christmas gifts for my family last year. I love looking at it because each piece makes me think of a specific quilt and the person I made it for. It's like a mental family reunion! LOL
