Buyers remorse
As an add on to an on-line order I ordered a charm pack to see if I liked the fabric well enough to purchase yardage. Decided I liked the colour palette but print was a bit frou-frou for my tastes. Then inexplicably ordered two more several months later when they were on clearance! Commence searching for pattern which uses three charm packs and find MSQC Tranquil Triangles tutorial. Now on to searching high and low for border fabric, luckily found at clearance price. All the time, effort and $ to make a quilt out of fabric I wasn’t that wild about!
I initially used the same random layout as shown in the tutorial and hated it. Spent hours rearranging HSTs and this is the best I could come up with.
My takeaway? No more precuts unless I have a specific project in mind and purchase all yardage needed to complete the project at the same time.
i do think this will be to my MIL’s tastes and so that is where this is heading.

I think it's great, and I admire you tackling a challenge. Your workmanship is lovely and personally I've always liked dark backgrounds.
When I look back at my projects I have a rating system, one is for "did this meet my mental image of what the project was supposed to be" and often that has a higher rating for that than "do you like it". But sometimes, "did you have fun making it" is the highest rated category -- which is better than when that is the low score!
My latest project is also a challenge for myself when I picked up a bag of scraps that I would never had collected on my own but I could see worked as a whole. It's good for me to stretch myself every now and then but I'm quickly retreating to my comfort zone for the next project or two
