Fabric Rug project with 3/4 inch strips
#1
I had some fabric that was given to me that I would not use on a quilt, so I thought I would use it to make this Fabric rope rug. You can do this with all of you scrap strips. Warning...this is not a one day project. Wrapping the rope with the elmer's glue and fabric takes a lot of time. When you sew you have to do a small amount at a time and sew it over and over. There may be a better way. I have been trying different stitches. I have been stitching it over and over. I figured this will be on the floor so you can not see the thread. You can see my progress on Thriftyideastoday.com

Wow that is gong to be really nice and a lot of patience to finish.
I think the reason that it is so hard to sew is most people have used a smaller diameter cord to make these not rope. Clothes line comes to mind.

The thickness of this 100 percent cotton rope is 3/16 inch. I do not think I could use a rope that is thicker than that.
If you have kids or grandkids they may enjoy wrapping the fabric around the rope for you. Since you would be using elmer's glue. It is very easy just time consuming. Be sure to tell them to wrap it tightly. I have no kids at home to help me... ; (

I took a workshop to make a rug like this. We hand sewed the the rug together as we went using a large upholstery needle. It wasn't hard to sew at all. I think we were using the braided cotton rope, the brown looking one sold at hardware stores. That rug is years old and is now out in DH's shop for the cats to lay on. I take a water hose to it every once in a while and it dries fast.

Your rug is going to be fabulous! Check out the tutorials page here another board member Eddie has a tutorial to use fabric strips and cotton clothesline to make fabric bowls. He has some very good ideas for stitching the rounds.

Did you stitch a straight line or a zig zag. The more I sew it the sturdier it seems to be. I know I will like it when its done. If I make another one I will stick with one type of stitch. This would make a good winter project.
