hand quilting question on already started quilt
#1
So while helping my mom clean her room a while ago, we pulled all of the quilts out of the cedar chest, shook them, refolded them, and put them back. While doing this, I saw an unfinished quilt that the materials looked newer than the others (most of the ones in the chest are ones my grandma or great grandma made) and asked her about it. She said it was one she started for her bed, and when she started to quilt it realized her machine wasn't large enough to quilt it and sending it to be quilted was too expensive. Therefore, the quilt has been sitting in her closet for at least 15 years now, unfinished. As she hasn't gotten a new machine, I was curious if I could hand quilt it, but do a different design, she started going through the middle, so it's divided into 4 rectangles. Could I hand quilt the rest? I don't want to take out what she's already done, because the quilt is huge. And as it would be for everyday use, I don't see why I couldn't just keep going. I would love to finish it for her and give it to her for Christmas this year, or next, depending on when I finished.
If I do go ahead and quilt the large rectangles do you have any suggestions for what I could do? I'm relatively new at hand quilting so would like to have something not too hard.
The quilt is 84 x 96 with 18 inches of quilting down the center which leaves me with 39 x 33 inch blocks.

the top of the quilt, can kind of see where she started to quilt it

the backing that she used

the quilting, done right through the center

where it crosses in the middle, but not all of the 'waves' are done, I'd need to do 3 more

I would finish it with hand quilting,or I would try to finish it with machine quilting. The wavy lines look to be fairly easy to do on a machine if you rolled up the edges. Do what you are comfortable with, and enjoy the quilt your mother started.

its a lovely quilt and machine and hand quilting can be done on the same quilt as to what design I would probably do something with curves to compliment what your Mum has done and put a label on the back to tell the story

Sarah: It is up to you what you do and keep that in mind as all of us tail you what to do but. If it is quilted in the mid. and you wish to keep your moms work {I would to} A lot of the small free standing quilting frames work from the mid. so if you have a hand hold hoop use that if you have a big frame you can put in that just make sure that you get it in the frame smooth. if you have a frame that has three roller just uee two {i use the in side one} I shoud have maked it clear that I was talking about HAND quilting Good luck and have fun. what a gift for your and mom and yourkidsin years to come.

well I decided to just keep going with it, hand quilting the other 2 waves and then splitting the waves to continue around the edge to meet up with the waves that go the other way. as for the center of the blocks, I want to try fan quilting it, but have something in the middle of them. maybe hearts.
and as I don't want to ask her what she was going to name it, I might call it "Scrapped Together" as it kind of looks scrappy, but all the fabric was bought for it and only those are used in it. any other ideas? I'm really bad at the naming process
