403a whines ???
Is there a thing about too much grease on the gears? Yesterday I gave the gears a bit of grease, as I've had the machine 8 months and thought I should. If I put on too much and that is causing the whining how do I remove the extra grease. Before I did that the machine sounded fine, though I have not heard what any other 403's sound like.
Thanks, Libber

All my gear driven machines whine somewhat. I have a 15-91, 2 401's, a 500 and a 503. They all have their own "song" that is different from belt driven machines. Does it sound a lot different than it did before you greased it? It shouldn't hurt to grease the gears (be really careful not to over grease the gear on the top of the motor shaft though). Maybe it is whining more because it is going faster now!

I agree with fluffygirl. Since you greased it, it could be running faster which is making the whining sound. Between me, my mom and my grandmother we have 5 403a machines and I have 1 401a. The faster they run the more they whine.

If you join the vintage singers group on yahoo, there have been postings about this. Just pulling from memory, I believe there are some bearings that may need oiling/greasing that can be causing the whine. I have a 401 and there is NO whine. If you join the group you can search past posts about it and read up on it. I would want to fix it and not live with it.

When I was describing the "whine" in my machines I didn't mean a annoying whine-it is more like a fast whirring sound which some people might describe as a whine. It is definitely different if you are used to the sound of a belted machine. If it is a really annoying sound, then it does need more attention.

Thank you to all of you who replied to my question. I appreciate your observations. Yesterday I removed with a clean, lint free cloth some of the extra grease. It has quieted down. You are right, the faster I go the more it whines.
It reminds me of a plane engine revving up for take-off, though it is not a 'complaining' type of whine.
