Help...Something followed me home from an auction......
Help...Something followed me home from an auction. This Singer machine with a serial number of
G6449497, treadle just latched on to me, all for $22.50. Now that is home, I have no idea what to do with it. I've taken a lot of dirt and dust off, but where do I go from there? How do I really clean this machine, cabinet and workings? I will definitely need a new belt...where can I purchase that? Just turning the wheel, the needle does go up and down. The bobbin is not a shuttle...that surprised me. Help, how do I learn or even get information on what to try to do? I read all of the info this board gives...everyone is so knowledgeable and helpful. Would appreciate any advise you can give me. Thanks for reading...I would post a picture, but I have to learn how to do that also.

Congratulations Barb! Check out the pinned topic at the top of the main board and check out Muv & Fav's video on cleaning and oiling the machine. Do a Google search for Singer serials and select 'single letter prefix' to date your machine's year of manufacture (might not be the year it was purchased/used). You can get a leather belt from any sewing machine repair shop or eBay.
......Should be enough to keep you going for a day or two!!

Here is the link for Singer serial numbers. Book mark it in case any more vintage Singers follow you home. I will let you find your new girl's information.

Thanks to all of you for your words of wisdom. After I asked for help yesterday, I did find the tuts. from Muv and Fav. I only had time to watch the first one. I think I have some work in store for me, but am looking forward to it. Haven't found a name yet, but Lucy keeps calling to me. Thank you again, I will be keeping in touch.

From the Ismacs link posted above:
So that means that the machine you have is a model 66, one of 50,000 whose serial numbers were allocated on September 17, 1918. Therefore, I bet it has a round bobbin, located to the left of the needle.

Isn't it great? I love it, because I have people contact me saying do you have parts for my Singer sewing machine? It's black.... LOL! This helps me out so much. There are a couple of errors that I've found, but I'd say 98% of the machines I've looked up were correct to the best of my knowledge.
