information please = Old machine
was gifted a machine. I know from the name plate it is made in Japan. called a Standard. model H 74176 It also says it is a Delux Family Sewing Machine. It sews well, and would make a good go to machine , heavy as heck, but is in fair condition. Is it worth saving?
thanks for any info, and how can I find out more about this?

The number you gave is most likely the serial number not the model number. Pictures would help us try to identify it and give you some info. Japanese machines often had badged names on them for whatever distributor or store was selling them. like Steve said, if it sews it's worth saving.

I say "Yes, keep it." I have a 1959 Singer Slant-A-Matic 401A machine. It, too, is heavy. But then it stays put until I transport it is a sewing machine center for a good clean out. I love my machine; hubby and I bought it brand new from a Singer Sewing Center. If your machine sews well, it's well worth keeping. Take care of the machine, oiling it every six months or so. Try to find an owner's manual on it (I'd try the Internet first). Happy quilting and God bless you.
