I inquired about a beige/tan 301a a couple of weeks ago. The machine was setting up in the cabinet at a strange angle, so I asked him if it was broken or did he didn't know how to get it to go down. He said they didn't want to push it. I more or less forgot about it. The guy emailed me a couple of days ago and wanted to know if I would come look at it, as they were ready to make a deal on it.
I went to see it this morning. They machine is in good shape, with no divots or pin rash. They said the cradle was broken. There was some kind of wire holding up one of the parts that attaches to the cabinet. I said that was fine because I had a cradle and offered them $50.00 for it. They took it. When I got home and took out the wire and all the mess, I found they had lost the set screw. That was all that was wrong with it.
I've been wanting a cabinet like this for a while.
I'm happy.

Great find! That is the cabinet I grew up with and was thrilled to find one. It was put out by Singer and there is info on it on the net somewhere. I copied the sales flyer with the name of the cabinet but can't locate it. Great machine too!

Gave it a light oiling and greasing and tried it out. It has a little groan. So, I guess it needs more cleaning, oiling and greasing. I love the speed it has, though.
I have a black one, but never really messed with it. I overpaid for it and then forgot to look for the bobbin case, which it didn't have. I trashed the cabinet and didn't know to save the brackets on the opposite side of the cradle. Then, even though the decals are in good condition, and it has no missing paint, it has no shine. Glenn suggested I just wax it, but I was afraid I'd ruin the decals. So, it just went on the shelf. There's an old Southern saying, "it's snake bit", meaning it's has insurmountable problems. That black 301 may just be snake bit.
I guess it's time to spiff it up and sell it.
Hopefully, the beige and tan one will be a keeper.
