I can't picture a White 764 in my mind, but most older machines do not have an "on~off" switch.
You plug 'em in and if the wiring and motor is good the light will work and when you press on the foot controller the motor will run.

The White 764 I owned had the two plug-ins for light and motor. When it is plugged in it is on. Unless yours is hard-wired for the foot control and wall plug you need the plug-in block (if it is in a cabinet-look up inside-if it is in a case look to the right of the machine or under the machine for the plug in block). I don't think you can use it without the block because that is what connects the foot control and wall plug. It is a nice machine-I never bonded with mine and donated it to Habitat.
