I have the 185J, same green color. Yes, it certainly is heaving and am so grateful I found mine in a cabinet for $15.00. I thought that was a bargain, but free is always better. It sews like a dream, in fact am just now starting my June doll quilt using it. Get it running and you will love it. My favorite for piecing (of course I can't forget to mention my Featherweight for piecing, don't want to hurt her feelings.)

miriam, I don't know yet if the black will come off, I haven't had a chance to clean her up. Even if it doesn't it's a pretty machine and I hope that I'll be able to get her up and running after I get back from my trip in a week. I do need to order a new belt and maybe a bobbin tire, haven't checked that out yet. After cleaning her up, I'll plug it in and see if it goes, if not, I'll take the motor apart and see if maybe it just needs new brushes.

The black stuff might come up with stuff you use to get tar off cars

I have one like it that my DH bought at a thrift store for $5. They could not get the bobbin plate on and it needed a new belt. Cleaned, Oiled, greased and put the new belt on it and she makes beautiful stitches. I did find the serial number and I would tell you where but my niece currently has it at her house.

I just bought a 185 (made in Canada) yesterday. I think it just needs a new belt. Hope it works after I get that replaced.

I've been looking at those recently, too. Might just have to have one.
