Thanks to everyone who responded and helped. Miriam, what a clever idea with the spinner rather than a hand crank. I like that you let the kids sew. I have 6 sons who were all taught to sew. I did have an electric machine and no one ever sewed their finger like I did more than once on an old treadle when learning. It is fun to polish up the old machines and to have them respond with a nice stitch is even better. Thanks again, Ethel

All 3 of my kids sew and so far 1 grand kid. The next 3 oldest sew paper so far. The rest are too little. I think teaching boys to sew is VERY important. Sooner or later they will use a saw. If they sew their finger they will learn to be more careful. If they don't you can feel better about them using a saw. DH loves it when I use the saw and he installs - I like to use a saw anyway.
My machine has no boss and no table. The spinner was a cheapish way to make that machine work. The kidos LOVE using those. If you have a table and irons it is better though.

Steering Wheel Spinner came from NAPA less than $10 - I put it over one of the spokes. There are other designs. Ask for a TRACTOR STEERING WHEEL SPINNER or a suicide knob when you shop. You might need some rubber to pad things out a bit. We had some inner tube stuff around. The Vindex Special did not have room enough in the spokes - we got a cheap knob somewhere else. It does the job but it isn't as nice.

And the price is right!!! You will need a smaller knob than the ones at NAPA because there is not a lot of space between the spokes. Just search on line or go to a car parts store. They know exactly what a suicide knob is though.
