Any idea where I should go from here?

Christy,
I agree with greywuuf on the birth mark. He actually beat me to the idea it might be an oil stain.
I think I'd try to find a different style of handle and knobs. I'm not to happy with the sharpish look to the ones that were on it.

Is there any trick to the iron and soft cloth? Like I have to leave it on for a really long time or something? I tried it but really it didn't do much. It may have lightened a hair.

well you have to be careful not to burn the wood. I have actually heated gun stocks in the oven.... it just brings the oil to the surface, wipe off the oil sometimes use a little alcohol to kind of "float it out.. and repeat, you can try some water on the rag... the oil would "float on water.... if you steam that area IF it is oil that would help lift it out. or you could try using a hair dryer or a heat gun ( careful) to heat up that rea and see if any oil raises up ....

If you want to see what the wood would look like with a clear finish: wet it. It will look the same color with water on it as it will with the finish, but the finish will of course harden and stay that color. Then you will know how much of that spot will show through your finish.
Then you let the wood dry well again before you put anything else on it.

That looks to be cherry. The colors in cherry are veried. That's the charm of cherry.I really think you should get it sanded as well as you can and then just use polyurethain on it. I would not stain it.Cherry is beautiful on it's own.

Hmmm well in trying to remove the birthmark I made it worse. The whole area took on a grey tone.
I let it sit overnight and hoped for better in the morning but still have the grey. Carefully I took a fine grit sandpaper and was able to lighten it some but dare not go further for fear of going through the veneer. I am calling it good.
I have it outside while I remove the hinges and use the better lighting to seek out any bits left in the crevices I need to clean.
