I agree with Rodney. Are vintage machines awesome because they can be repaired/durable/reliable? Yes. They were still mass produced and every household had one. Some are more collectible/desirable than others, sure.
The suggestion that usually floats around is pick a price you are comfortable with and try to stick to it. I bought a dozen machines for less than $30 a piece before I spent more on one. Always try thrift stores and I have better luck at thrift stores that do pickups.
