The 830 was made and sold into the early eighties, but yes, generally this is a 70's model. Much the same for the 900 Nova, though it was introduced a few years later than the 830. The paint on the vintage Berninas are a bit delicate, thin and not very glossy. These machines can look a bit haggered on the outside, even when they haven't been used too much. If they are in very nice cosmetic conditon, you can be sure they have seen only occational use.

Really breaks my heart, as well to see the condition of the body...I wonder if one of those fellows who paint featherweights could do a repair job of sorts on the nicked/dinged portions? When I think of the workmanship that went into these machines and see how some of them have been neglected, it really makes me sad.

I bought an 830 for $200 when they wanted $650 because the feed dogs were frozen. Took it to my Bernina gal mechanic and she ran a hair dryer on the problem area off and on for about 30 minutes to loosen up the old grease or oil. Runs like a new one!

I have a Bernina 1020 that I bought in the early 90's and not once has this machine had a problem. I do bring it in for a tuneup faithfully every 1 1/2 years. Every time I have a tuneup the mechanic says that I should never get rid of this machine. it is one of the last few made with metal parts. If I were you, I would, personally, make arrangements in advance for a tuneup and drive the 50 miles to have it serviced while you wait. That way you would know if there are any issues. You got a great deal, I hope your friend knows how lucky she is to have a friend like you.
