    To follow up........I did get the Tri-Flow Synthetic Grease for the gears on my Singer 401, and my machine actually seems to run quieter than it did with the lubricant I used before. Anybody notice this?

    Yes I have noticed that. I use T-F grease in all my machines with metal gears.

    I used Vaseline on my kids butts when they were infants and still in diapers to prevent any diaper rash. Dh bought big jar for his tools in shed so they wouldn't rust. Even some of his mechanic tools are coated in Vaseline in his tool box. I have oil and lube for Singer machines they both came with it. One lube tube looks old and I have used it on my 401 So far nothing and it sews like a purring kitten. The newer one is same way.
