That is a FAR more complicated answer than the question implies...
The biggest question is "Is the machine japanned or painted"
Then the question is are there decals and if so, what condition
THEN you can begin to figure out the right cleaning approach

With that said, you can almost ALWAYS use sewing machine oil to clean it.
