    I'd like to see if I can find manuals online. The White keeps tightening up the tension so it stops sewing. The Kenmore seems to be working fairly well. If they are worth the effort I'd like to see if they can be donated to the 4-H sewing program.

    SuzzyQ,

    Nope, I haven't a clue. Both of them are generic badged machines. The White is a Japanese made machine, the other one ... who knows.

    Here is two sites that have photos of machines to help you ID them. Since these are badged machines you might find the manual for a different brand machine shows the same pic as yours. You can use that.

    { http://www.tias.com/stores/relics/ }
    { http://sewing-machines.blogspot.com/...e-manuals.html }

    I'm sure there are more sites, I just have those two handy.

    Well, the first one is a Kenmore, so the model number should be on it somewhere. Should start with a 148. or a 158. You can sometimes get a free manual at searspartsdirect.com.

    With the White, if there is a number on the front, under the bed, that might be the model number, and you can search for it at singerco.com, and they might have a manual.

    Thank you both ... I will have a closer look at the next meeting. The Kenmore seems to be working well for the members. The White's tension just gets tighter and tighter ... and it's a straight stitch ...

    Have you tried 'flossing' the machine with dental floss? Basically set it up and thread it to sew but run it through the tension plates. It may have a bit of fluff that's stuck between the tension plates.

    Usually fluff will loosen the tension. It tens to hold the tension disks apart thus letting the thread slip through without any (or less) resistance.
